Dental Veneers

Ace Dental in Roseville offers a complete line of cosmetic dental treatments, and one of the most well-known cosmetic restorations in dentistry today are dental veneers. These have become widely popular because of celebrities who have gotten smile makeovers. Many of them got dental veneers to improve the shape, color, and overall appearance of their teeth.

What are Dental Veneers?

Veneers are very thin dental prosthetics made of porcelain. They are specifically designed to cover up imperfections on teeth, even on those without functional issues. Unlike crowns, which cover the entire tooth surface, veneers are only used to cover the visible side of the tooth, also known as the labial or facial surface.

Most patients may think that veneers are applied only on the frontmost teeth, such as the incisors (lateral and central) and the canines. However, when dentists develop smile makeover plans, they usually include the premolars and even the molars in cosmetic treatment because they can still be seen when you smile.

When are Dental Veneers Used?

The best applications of veneers include:

  1. Covering up a single discolored tooth. The discoloration is frequently due to internal decay, root canal treatment, or an old or worn restoration.
  2. Improving the shape, size, or alignment of teeth. Teeth which are inclined, misshapen, or smaller than normal can be covered with veneers. Using this solution, patients can avoid invasive treatments which may damage an otherwise perfectly healthy tooth.
  3. Covering up gaps between teeth (diastema). A diastema can be very unsightly, especially if the affected teeth are the incisors. The best solution to fix this is to cover it with a custom-shaped veneer that will extend into the gap to create a much more natural-looking result.

How are Dental Veneers Placed?

Veneers are cemented onto the facial surface of the tooth. To give way for the prosthetic, the tooth surface needs to be trimmed approximately 0.5 mm in depth. The trimming process can cause slight discomfort and sensitivity. Some patients may need an anesthetic if they become uncomfortable during treatment.

dental veneers in rosevilleIt takes two visits to complete veneer installation. On the first visit, the tooth will be prepared and cleaned. Once the teeth have been trimmed, impressions will be taken and sent to a dental laboratory where the actual prosthetics will be fabricated.

During the waiting time, you may be given temporary solutions to cover up the teeth and prevent sensitivity. On your second visit, the finished dental veneers will be cemented onto the trimmed teeth. The dentist will examine the new look of your teeth as well as your bite and comfort. Final touches may be applied until the ideal result has been achieved.

Lumineers® are a brand of veneers which are highly preferred because of their thinness. If traditional veneers are 0.5 mm in thickness, Lumineers® are only 0.2 to 0.3 mm, approximately half the thickness of traditional options.

Because of their thinness, Lumineers® may not require the trimming procedure. Patients may choose this brand of veneers to avoid having to get anesthesia or experience the discomfort of tooth preparation. Dentists only need to clean and polish the tooth prior to the installation of Lumineers®. These can also be installed on the same day of tooth preparation if dental impressions are taken beforehand.

Lumineers® also have limitations when it comes to fixing dental imperfections. In most cases, Lumineers® can only be used on teeth that don’t have major aesthetic damage. Their thinness also doesn’t make them very effective tooth protectors.

If you just want to improve the shape or size of a tooth, Lumineers® can be a fast and painless solution. But if you have a deeply discolored tooth, Lumineers® will not be able to fix it because they are slightly translucent and the discoloration can still be visible underneath the porcelain.

Lumineers vs. Traditional Veneers: How to Decide

Neither Lumineers® nor traditional veneers are a one-size-fits-all solution. Lumineers® may work well for one patient while a traditional veneer may be highly recommended for another patient. Both choices have their pros and cons, and Dr. Sibia will help you decide which of the two is best for your specific dental condition. You will need to undergo close dental examination so that our dentist can develop a treatment plan for you.
