How are Dental Veneers Placed?

The trimming process can cause slight discomfort and sensitivity. Some patients may need an anesthetic if they become uncomfortable during treatment.

It takes two visits to complete veneer installation. On the first visit, the tooth will be prepared and cleaned. Once the teeth have been trimmed, impressions will be taken and sent to a dental laboratory where the actual prosthetics will be fabricated.

During the waiting time, you may be given temporary solutions to cover up the teeth and prevent sensitivity. On your second visit, the finished dental veneers will be cemented onto the trimmed teeth. Lumineers®

Lumineers® are a brand of veneers which are highly preferred because of their thinness. If traditional veneers are 0.5 mm in thickness, Lumineers® are only 0.2 to 0.3 mm, approximately half the thickness of traditional options.

Because of their thinness, Lumineers® may not require the trimming procedure. Patients may choose this brand of veneers to avoid having to get anesthesia or experience the discomfort of tooth preparation. Dentists only need to clean and polish the tooth prior to the installation of Lumineers®. These can also be installed on the same day of tooth preparation if dental impressions are taken beforehand.

Lumineers® also have limitations when it comes to fixing dental imperfections. In most cases, Lumineers® can only be used on teeth that don’t have major aesthetic damage. Their thinness also doesn’t make them very effective tooth protectors.

If you just want to improve the shape or size of a tooth, Lumineers® can be a fast and painless solution. But if you have a deeply discolored tooth, Lumineers® will not be able to fix it because they are slightly translucent and the discoloration can still be visible underneath the porcelain.

Neither Lumineers® nor traditional veneers are a one-size-fits-all solution. Lumineers® may work well for one patient while a traditional veneer may be highly recommended for another patient.
